چکیده

This book is a collection of the thirteenth series of the Laity Lectures of the New York Academy of Medicine. Delivered for the benefit of those interested in the medical and teaching professions and also in the related fields of social service and public health, the essays have a common theme which emphasizes the interrelationship of medical research with the public and its elected representatives in the government. The lectures deal mainly with contemplated research, such as the potentialities of radioactive isotopes in medical investigations which are discussed by Lewis L. Strauss of the Atomic Energy Commission. However, they include such diverse topics as "Food and Civilization," psychiatric problems in ageing, and cancer research. This little book contributes to the background knowledge of workers in the biological and physical sciences. The discussion of the "Inter-Relation of Pure and Applied Science in the Field of Medicine" by James B. Conant, President of Harvard, is of fundamental importance to all research workers. It presents to the laity with force and clarity the justification for the public and private financial support of all fields of medical research, extending from the basic sciences through the applied research laboratories to the clinical research workers in the hospitals and public health clinics. It is recommended to anyone who is concerned with scientific progress.

Interspecies introgressive hybridization in spiny frogs Quasipaa (Family Dicroglossidae) revealed by analyses on multiple mitochondrial and nuclear genes

Introgression may lead to discordant patterns of variation among loci and traits. For example, previous phylogeographic studies on the genus Quasipaa detected signs of genetic introgression from genetically and morphologically divergent Quasipaa shini or Quasipaa spinosa. In this study, we used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data to verify the widespread introgressive hybridization in t...

Maintenance of Species Boundaries Despite Ongoing Gene Flow in Ragworts

The role of hybridization between diversifying species has been the focus of a huge amount of recent evolutionary research. While gene flow can prevent speciation or initiate species collapse, it can also generate new hybrid species. Similarly, while adaptive divergence can be wiped out by gene flow, new adaptive variation can be introduced via introgression. The relative frequency of these out...

Testing the utility of internally transcribed spacer sequences in coral phylogenetics.

Reef-building corals often possess high levels of intraindividual and intraspecific ribosomal DNA (rDNA) variation that is largely polyphyletic between closely related species. Polyphyletic rDNA phylogenies coupled with high intraindividual rDNA variation have been taken as evidence of introgressive hybridization in corals. Interpreting the data is problematic because the rDNA cluster evolves i...

Molecular, Physicochemical and Rheological Characteristics of Introgressive Triticale/Triticum monococcum ssp. monococcum Lines with Wheat 1D/1A Chromosome Substitution

Three sets of hexaploid introgressive triticale lines, with Triticum monococcum ssp. monococcum (cultivated einkorn wheat) genes and a bread wheat chromosome 1D substituted for chromosome 1A, and one set of secondary triticale lines were evaluated for grain and flour physicochemical and dough rheological characteristics in two generations (F7 and F8). Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and fl...

Asymmetric Introgressive Hybridization Among Louisiana Iris Species

In this review, we discuss findings from studies carried out over the past 20+ years that document the occurrence of asymmetric introgressive hybridization in a plant clade. In particular, analyses of natural and experimental hybridization have demonstrated the consistent introgression of genes from Iris fulva into both Iris brevicaulis and Iris hexagona. Furthermore, our analyses have detected...

Evidence for adaptive introgression in plants

Natural interspecific hybridization has been observed in a diverse array of taxa [1-3], and the production of such hybrids can have a wide range of evolutionary consequences. For instance, natural hybridization can act as a ‘destructive’ force, resulting in the fusion of taxa that do not reveal strong reproductive isolation [1]. Alternatively, it can result in evolutionary novelty via the produ...
